Bought this watch in wine infused daze and happy I did. Went for the applied hex logo, kinda wish I’d gone for the printed hex but still love it. It seems like the reimagining of the 1016 that Rolex might do. I really enjoy the blending of vintage and modern design in this piece. Bracelet is a little stiff but hopefully that’ll ease up with time, and I do think you could get away with male endlinks on this small watch. Wears and looks amazing. Straight up.

Go printed logo though.. Uber vintage

Fantastic watch , perfect size for 6,5 inch wrist. The printed logo is perfect with printed number/index.

    San Martin SN021-G Review

My research for a business-casual automatic watch narrowed to San Martin, Tissot, and Hamilton. Depending on the model, retailer, and discounts, I compiled a small group from which to select. I chose the San Martin SN021-G for two reasons: the customized dial option and the PT5000 movement.

Purchase Transaction: I bought my watch from San Martin in China. Using their website took two tries and a call to my bank to complete the purchase. I received the watch via DHL about two weeks after purchase. It was packed well in a rugged plastic box that appears somewhat waterproof. Along with the watch were an extra cloth watch band, paperwork, and a bracelet adjustment tool with extra pins. Given the ruggedness and bubble-wrap, I think the box would have protected the watch had it been dropped from a tall building.

Custom Dial: The luminous white markings on the black dial is crisp, readable, and masculine. The top half lettering reads “San Martin” in their cursive font. I asked that my nickname be written under it, using a smaller font of the same cursive. The original bottom half has two lines: the topmost reads “Automatic” in All Caps block lettering, while the lower line reads 100m=330ft. I changed that. I added “Chinese” above “Automatic” and removed the =330ft. I requested the block lettering be changed to cursive to balance the watch face. The lume is superb and quite readable at night.

I added “Chinese” because their PT5000 movement (clone of ETA 2824-2 according to the internet) is purely Chinese. Given that and China now makes many high-quality products, I felt it right to display the watch’s country of origin. I removed the =330 for the simple fact many wearers of automatic watches know the approximate length/depth of 100 meters. Given that is the watch’s water resistance, most of us will never take our watches close to that depth. The best I can free dive on the rare snorkeling adventure is 30 feet. In fact, I swam laps today with my SN021-G, and it did perfectly well.

Case, Crystal, and Bracelet: The dial around the crystal is polished stainless. Beyond that, the stainless is brushed. The polished and brushed finishes are flawless. The backside is stainless (glass would be more fun to see the functioning PT5000) and feels good on the wrist. The crystal is high quality. The crown is the screw-in type with the San Marin logo on it. The bracelet is stainless and matches the watch. I passed on adjusting the bracelet myself using the included tool. So I paid a local jeweler to resize it. After the removed two links, the watch fits perfectly.

Weight: From reading watch reviews, I noticed some complaints about heavy watches. The dividing line between heavy and light watches alludes me, but I can say my SN021-G is heavier than my digital Casio. Nevertheless, I cannot feel the weight of either watch when I wear them. Since I lack a scale that measures the weight of small items, I can only say my SN021-G weighs about the same as my iPhone.

Movement: Using old-fashioned mathematics, I checked the timekeeping of the PT5000 on day 5, day 10, day 15, and day 30. The watch averages a loss of 7.8 seconds a day. San Martin told me they tune this movement to within 15 seconds a day (its standard accuracy is 30-40 seconds a day). I am happy that mine is at 8 seconds. I nicknamed my PT5000 the Power Train Five.

My Thoughts: I have five watches: An old Casio digital, a Bulova quartz, a Citizen Eco-drive, an Orient Automatic Diver, and my San Martin. The Casio is my go-to if I am doing rough stuff since I don’t mind if it breaks. The Bulova was a gift and uses batteries (not very Green by 21st Century standards). The Citizen is excellent but too unremarkable. The Orient is my lap swimming watch, and it does well at it. And my new San Martin SN021-G is quickly become my daily watch because it is comfortable, looks very good, gives me a good feeling when I see my nickname on the custom dial. The only thing missing is a date window, but that gives me a reason to look for a new one next year.
